Dr. Louise T. Chow

Dr. Louise T. Chow is a world-renowned molecular biologist best known for her groundbreaking discovery of RNA splicing and alternative RNA processing in 1977 using electron microscopy while at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Her landmark research served as the primary foundation for the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to her collaborator.

Born in Hunan, China, Dr. Chow earned her B.S. at National Taiwan University and her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Caltech. She went on to hold positions at UCSF, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the University of Rochester, and UAB. For nearly four decades, her research has focused on human papillomaviruses (HPVs), pioneering 3D tissue culture systems to model HPV infections and developing targeted therapies to combat cervical cancer and rare HPV-related diseases.
