Dr. Steven A. Kivelson is a theoretical condensed matter physicist, the Prabhu Goel Family Professor of Physics at Stanford University, and a member of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics (SITP). After earning his A.B. (1974) and Ph.D. (1979) in Physics from Harvard University and holding faculty appointments at Stony Brook University and UCLA, he joined Stanford in 2004. He is widely recognized for his groundbreaking work on strongly correlated electronic systems and quantum materials, including developing foundational theories for high-temperature cuprate and iron-based superconductors, proposing electronic liquid crystal phases (such as nematic and stripe orders) where electrons self-organize within solids, and advancing our understanding of topological states, charge fractionalization in the fractional quantum Hall effect, and soliton mechanisms in conducting polymers.
